AG Announces Voluntary Surrender Program

Yesterday, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced a “Safe Surrender” event at the Trinity Gospel Temple in Canton. Anyone with any kind of misdemeanor or low-level felony warrant can now come to the church any time after noon Sept. 30 through Oct. 3 and turn themselves in. The innovative program aims to help reduce the chance of potentially dangerous encounters between police and fugitives. The Attorney General said on Tuesday, that by turning themselves in, those people with outstanding, non-violent warrants will have the chance to move their lives forward without having to worry that law enforcement is looking for them. He noted however, that amnesty for offenses is not an option, but he did allude to favorable consideration from prosecutors and the courts for those who accept responsibility.
