Alice Jean (A.J.) Goldsmith, 87

Alice Jean (A.J.) Goldsmith, 87 years, of Bryan, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2015 at her residence with her family by her side. Alice was born on April 17, 1928 in Bryan, Ohio, the daughter of the late Oscar Ward and Winifred (Hutchinson) Eaton. She was a 1946 graduate of Bryan High School and served as secretary of the class reunion committee. She then attended Bowling Green State University. She was a big Ohio State Football fan and she also enjoyed watching the marching band and “The Script Ohio.” Alice was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church where she had served as an assistant organist, Chancel choir member, Serendipity Circle Leader, L.I.F.E Group, substitute for the Hand Bell Choir, and church office volunteer. She was a previous secretary of the United Church Women executive board. She was also a third generation member of Progress Club and a member of Fortnightly Study Club, a volunteer and secretary for Outreach of Bryan, a volunteer for the Bryan Hospital gift shop, active in both Williams County Playhouse and as an accompanist for the Fountain City Festival production of BRIGADOON. Alice also held memberships in Friends of the Library, Williams County Historical Society, and Community Concerts Association. Traveling was an important part of her life, having been in all 50 of the United States. She also has been to Europe several times. Her hobbies included the collecting of nativity sets, and she was a member of the national organization, Friends of the Creche. She organized a local ecumenical Creche Exhibit that was shown for years. She also had a collection of state capitol pictures that she had taken, as well as photos of church steeples. She enjoyed watching Ohio State football, knitting and playing bridge.

Surviving are her two daughters, Alona (Bill) Martin of Bryan, Ohio, and Rebecca (Henry) Mosur of Dunedin, Florida; four grandchildren, Jacob McAfee of Bryan, Zachariah McAfee of Bryan, Jessica Robinson Mortenson of Palm Harbor, Florida, and Samantha Robinson Amato of Tucson, Arizona; three great-grandchildren, Emily Mortenson, Kenna Mortenson and Cecily Amato; sister-in-law, Judith Newell Eaton of South Bend, Indiana; two nephews, James Eaton and Joseph

Eaton; cousins, Mary Ann (John) Borck of Wauseon, Ohio, and Fred (Elaine) Hutchinson of San Antonio, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Cecil W. Goldsmith; four sons, William Ward, Robert Steven, Alan James, and Mark Douglas Goldsmith; one great-granddaughter, Katherine Alona McAfee; two brothers, infant William Ward Eaton and James Henry Eaton; cousins, Walter Unger II and Mary Unger Krill.

There will be no visitation hours. Following her cremation there will be a memorial service to be held at Father John’s on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1:00 pm with Reverend Becky Schofield-Motter officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, Bryan.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial donations be given to the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Outreach of Bryan or the Wesley United Methodist Church.
