AquaBounty is one step closer to Ohio Department of Natural Resources approval for water withdrawal, though the company will have to wait three months to know for sure. The aquaculture company produces genetically modified salmon and plans to build a facility in Pioneer that will produce 10,000 metric tons of fish a year. In order to withdraw the needed 3 million gallons of water per day from an underground aquifer in the Lake Erie watershed, the company submitted an application for a Water Withdrawal and Consumptive Use Permit with ODNR. That hurdle is now done, officials say.
