Belva A. Bassett, 84

Belva A. Bassett, 84, of Mark Center, Ohio, passed away Monday, March 4, 2024, at her residence with her family by her side.  Belva was born July 13, 1939, in Kankakee, Illinois, daughter of the late Roger and Louise (Brayton) Zeedyk.  She graduated from Mark Center School and obtained both her Bachelor and Master of Education degrees from Bowling Green State University.  She married Rex D. Bassett on July 16, 1957, in Angola, Indiana, and he survives.  Belva taught 2nd Grade at the former Farmer and Sherwood Elementary schools for 25 years.  Before becoming an educator, she served as the head cook at the Mark Center School for ten years.  Along with her husband, Belva was a member of the Hicksville First Church of Christ and served as an advisor for the Mark Blue Ribbon 4-H club for 15 years.  She also served as the Mark Center Township Clerk for multiple terms.  Belva loved flower and vegetable gardening, canning, and collecting antique tea pots.  Most of all, Belva was proud of her teaching career and dearly loved her 2nd graders.

She is survived by her husband, Rex Bassett of Mark Center; four children, Janie (Rex) Haver of Sherwood, Ohio, Rex (Roxanne) Bassett, Jr. of Mark Center, Ohio, Kathy Smith of Holgate, Ohio, and Karen (Rex) Oskey of Sherwood, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Jesse (Jill) Haver, Mindi (Jason) Kepler, Lindsey (Ryan) Profera, Kaci (Jake) Novick, Derek (Erin) Martin, Melissa Martin, Trisha (Gina) Smith, and Heather (Josh) Anderson; nine great-grandchildren; and nine siblings, Scarlet, Danny, Roger, Denver, Sinda, Zane, Debra, Gala, and Gena.  Belva was preceded in death by her parents; and five siblings, Brenda, Larry, Loren, Emory and Infant Roger.

Visitation for Belva A. Bassett will be held Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 3:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville.  Funeral Services for Belva will begin at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, March 11, 2024, in the funeral home with Pastor Jerold Tear officiating.  Interment will follow in Six Corners Cemetery, Hicksville.
