Clarice Shininger, 98

Clarice C. Shininger, 98 years, of Defiance, passed away Tuesday morning, August 25, 2015, at GlennPark of Defiance, where she had been a resident the past four years.  Clarice was born June 1, 1917, in Paulding County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Cyril and Zita (McCarthy) Arend.  She was a 1933 graduate of St. John’s Business School.  She married Clarence N. Shininger on November 25, 1937, in Defiance, and he preceded her in death on December 18, 1995.  A devoted wife and mother, Clarice was a dedicated homemaker, caring for her family.  She had also worked as a bookkeeper for Defiance Landmark.  Clarice was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Delaware Bend, where she was also active in the Altar and Rosary Society, serving as past President. She also was a past President of the Parent Teacher Association at Sherwood Delaware School.

Surviving are her seven children, Kenneth (Jean) Shininger of Defiance, Cyril (Judy) Shininger of Lebanon, Ohio, and Leo (Mary) Shininger of Defiance, Mary Lou (Lavon) Speiser of Sherwood, Nancy (Ed) Herman of Southern Pines, North Carolina, Helen (John) Leininger of Archbold, Ohio, and Wanda Sobota of Fort Wayne, Indiana; 12 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren and one sister, Beatrice Grossheim of Defiance. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clarence, one son, John Shininger, one granddaughter, Barbara Layman, two grandsons, David Michael Leininger and A.W. Sobota, 5 siblings, Meldan Arend, Carl Arend, Donald Arend, Dorothy Shaffer, and Patrick Arend.

Visitation for Clarice Shininger will be held Thursday, August 27, 2015, from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood, where the Rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon.  Funeral Mass for Clarice will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2015, at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Delaware Bend, 16428 Speaker Road, Defiance with Father John Stites officiating.  Interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Catholic Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions be made to a charity of the donor’s choice or masses to St. Isidore Catholic Church.
