The hiring of Defiance’s next police chief is expected to be accomplished in early autumn. The city’s civil service commission discussed the hiring process during a meeting Tuesday. The three-member commission had decided unanimously on June 16 to exercise a city charter provision allowing outside candidates as well as inside candidates to apply for the position. Police Chief Tim Tobias is retiring on August 2nd. The commission will use the help of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police Advisory Services in Dublin, to provide the oral assessment center for the hiring process and will be done by three “executive-level law enforcement consultants.”
