Donald Stephen Walker, 76

Donald Stephen “Steve” Walker, age 76, of Edgerton, Ohio, passed away at 12:21 P.M. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at The Laurels of DeKalb in Butler, Indiana, with his family at his side after an extended illness.  Mr. Walker was a 1966 graduate of Edgerton High School, where he served as class president.  He was active in sports, playing both basketball and baseball, with the nickname of “Chico,” which still stands to this day with his buddies of that era.  Following high school he continued playing softball for Pierce Sunoco for a number of years.  He was active in the community, especially with the summer recreation association, where coached Little League baseball and gave tennis lessons.  He worked with the Edgerton Chamber of Commerce to organize a successful business and trade show that became the template for future shows in the community.  He was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Cleveland Browns and was also an avid golfer who enjoyed playing with his family.  For many years he enjoyed bowling in leagues in Bryan, Ohio, and Butler, Indiana.  Throughout his work career, he was employed by The Aro Corporation, General Tire, Henry Wheeler Shoes in Montpelier, Gorny-Winzeler, and Edgerton Super-Valu and retired as a driver from Stark Truss in Edgerton after sixteen years of service.  Steve was a devoted member of St. Mary Catholic Church, faithfully attending weekend and weekday Masses, and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #1494 in Edgerton.  His devotion to his family was unwavering as he followed the careers of his children and was a doting grandfather to his two granddaughters.

Donald Stephen “Steve” Walker was born on July 25, 1947, in Bryan, Ohio, the son of Donald L. and Anna Louise (Wheeler) Walker.  He married Ruth E. Sanders on May 20, 1967, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Edgerton, and she survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Karen Walker, of Edgerton; one son, Todd (Stacy) Walker, of Cleveland, Ohio; two granddaughters, Hannah Walker, of Edgerton, and Whitney Walker, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kent Walker; one sister, Linda Kimpel; and one brother, Alan Walker.

A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary Catholic Church with Reverend Andrew Wellmann officiating. The family will receive visitors in the church prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M.  Interment in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery will be private.
