Help For Teachers

A bill…backed by Sen. Sherrod Brown would allow teachers the ability to deduct more of the out-of-pocket money they spend on their classrooms. Every year, 94% of public school teachers spend hundreds of dollars of their own money on different supplies for their classroom, Brown told reporters. The Educators Expense Deduction Modernization Act of 2023 will quadruple the amount of money teachers can deduct from taxes for out-of-pocket expenses. It will raise the base amount from $250 to $1,000 dollars, he added. Purchasing posters and having them laminated as well as having additional books to supplement lesson plans are not covered by districts. Easily depleted items, such as tissues and pencils, can also come out of the teacher’s pockets.
