Irene E. Winnie, 100

Irene E. Winnie, 100 years of Ney, Ohio with her family by her side stepped into the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday, October 22, 2023, her 100th birthday at Eden Place, Defiance.  Irene was born October 22, 1923, in Ney, Ohio, the daughter of the late Grover C. and Edith C. (Dreher) Lantz. She was a 1941 graduate of Ney High School and continued her education at International Business College in Fort Wayne.  Irene married James R. Winnie on July 23, 1945, at the Baer Field Air Force chapel in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and he survives.  Irene was a Bank Teller and Assistant Cashier for State Bank for 31 years, retiring in 1985.  Prior to this, she was employed by Lincoln National Bank for four years. Irene was a member of the Ney Church of God, she served as the church treasure for 25 years, she served as president of the WSCS Women’s Group, the Ney American Legion Post 620 Ladies Auxiliary, Bryan Order of the Eastern Star, and the Korean Veterans Chapter 1 Associate Member and the Ladies Zenobia Shrine.  Irene had a passion for flower and vegetable gardening, crocheting, reading, and working crossword puzzles. Irene’s favorite Bible verse was Psalm 19.

Surviving is her husband of 78 years, James Winnie of Ney; two sons, George (Darla) Winnie of Defiance and Keith (Kay) Winnie of Defiance; daughter-in-law Pam Winnie of Russellville, Arkansas. She leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Kent Winnie, and Paul Winnie; three grandchildren, Patrick Winnie and Roger Winnie, Kelly Kunz; one brother, Leroy Lantz and one sister, Irma Hullett.

Visitation for Irene E. Winnie will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2023, from 2:00pm – 6:00pm in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan.  Funeral services for Irene will be held Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 11:00 am in the Ney Church of God, 03413 State Route 15, Ney, Ohio with visitation on Thursday being from 10:00 am – 11:00 am at the church. Pastors Doug Nolt and Kevin King will be officiating, with interment following in Ney Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions be made to the Ney Church of God.
