Iris Short, 86

Iris Jean Short, 86 years, of Bryan, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance, with her family at her side.  Iris was born July 5, 1928, in West Unity, Ohio, the daughter of the late Francis L. and Ethel (Partee) Stipe.  She was a 1946 graduate of West Unity High School where she was the class salutatorian. She then went to Defiance College where she received her teaching credentials.  She married R. Stanford Short on July 23, 1950 in West Unity.  Iris was a devoted wife and mother and family was most important to her.  She was a 50 year member of Wesley United Methodist Church.  Iris also was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Brownie Troop Leader, and 4-H Advisor and volunteered as a Meals on Wheels driver for 19 years.  She was a former member of the Eastern Star.  Iris enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, working on word search puzzles and watching “Wheel of Fortune”- solving the puzzles many times before the contestants.

Surviving is her husband of 64 years, R. Stanford Short of Bryan; one son, James B. Short of Montpelier, Ohio; one daughter, Rebecca “Becky” (Dr. Chris) Calaway of Green, Ohio; three grandchildren, Dr. Bethany (Anthony) Hahn of Worthington, Ohio, Dr. Adam (Dr. Meredith) Calaway of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Cassidy Calaway of Columbus, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Hahn; two sisters-in-law, Willene Pifer of Sandusky, Ohio, and Marian Stipe of Harbor Springs, Michigan, as well as several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert, William Ted and Walter Ned Stipe; four sisters-in-law, Hulda Stipe, Mary Stipe, Sharon Miller and Gwenn Short.

Visitation for Iris Jean Short will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and also on Saturday, March 7, 2015, from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan, where funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Becky Schofield Motter officiating.  Interment will follow in Floral Grove Cemetery, West Unity, Ohio.
