Marie L. Surbey, 97 years, formerly of Edon, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014, just four days before her 98th birthday, at Hillside Country Living, Bryan, where she had been a resident the past five years. Marie was born January 8, 1916 in Alvordton, Ohio, the daughter of the late Harve and Bernice (Clay) Throne. She was a 1934 graduate of West Unity High School. She married Lawrence Surbey on September 6, 1937 in Alvordton, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 1962. Marie was employed by the North Central Schools as a cook, having formerly worked as a Nurse’s Assistant at the former Williams County Home. After her retirement, Marie worked for the Ohio Turnpike Commission. She was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Dunkard Brethren Church. Marie enjoyed crocheting, working crossword puzzles and going to auctions.
Marie is survived by her son, Philip (Melanie) Surbey of Edon; two daughters, Elizabeth (Pastor Willard) Spilman of Arvada, Colorado and Lola (Pastor Terry) Gunderman of Goshen, Indiana; daughter-in-law Emily (Moris) Cogswell of Bryan; 11 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; and one brother, George (Renee) Throne of Manheim, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence; one son, David Surbey; one brother, John Throne; one sister, Margaret Rupp and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Marie L. Surbey will be held Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 202 North Liberty Street, West Unity. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with her sons-in-law, Pastor Terry Gunderman and Pastor Willard Spilman officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Grove Cemetery, Pioneer, Ohio.
