Michael Volkert, 72

Michael P. Volkert, 72 years, of Mark Center, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Laurels of Defiance, where he has been a resident the past four weeks.  Michael was born November 23, 1940 in Defiance, Ohio the son of Charles and Muriel (Fillman) Volkert.  He was a 1958 graduate of Central High School, Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Michael was a Marine Corps veteran serving from 1959 until his discharge in 1963.  He married Gloria J. Grant on September 6, 1964 at Salem Evangelical Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana.  Michael was employed by General Motors in Defiance for 37 ½ years, retiring in 2003.    Michael was affiliated with the Defiance County Sheriff’s Department beginning in the Sheriff’s Posse and continuing on as a Special Deputy.  He was a lifetime member of the Defiance County Fish and Game and a social member of the Sherwood VFW Post 5665.  Michael had four loves in his life, his family and friends, the United States Marine Corps, The Defiance County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana University Basketball.

Surviving is his wife, Gloria J. of Mark Center; one daughter Stacy Volkert and her significant other, William Hobbs; one son Brad Volkert of Sherwood; four grandchildren, Jordan and Kenneth Vickery and Chelsea and Blake Teegardin; one great-granddaughter, Rhylee; his sister, Sherrell Meyer of Defiance; one brother, William Volkert also of Defiance; his mother-in-law, Violet Grant and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Darl Grant and his beloved dog, Rusty.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 beginning at 11:00 a.m. and continuing until 2:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood.  A service celebrating Michael’s life will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office Walk-Thur.  Father Allan Fillman will officiate the service.  Interment will follow in Sherwood Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the Sherwood VFW Post 5665.  The family has requested casual dress for Michael’s service, jeans and boots will be just fine.
