A Napoleon woman has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in the attempted murder of a Cloverdale priest. 66 year old Frances Wilhelm had been charged with attempted murder; and felonious assault. The charges stem from an incident on Sept. 5, when Wilhelm allegedly attacked Father Herman Scherger with a hammer, striking him multiple times in the head. The attack occurred at Scherger’s home on Ohio 114 in Cloverdale. On Wednesday, Putnam County Common Pleas Court Judge Randall Basinger, found that at the time of the offenses, Wilhelm “did not know the wrongfulness of her acts, as a result of a severe mental disease or defect.” Basinger revoked Wilhelm’s bond and a hearing has been set for 1 p.m. March 23 to determine if she will be subjected to a court order or institutionalization by the court.
