Ohio Gov. vetoes bill that sought to expand hours during which 14 & 15 yr olds could work on school nights.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Wednesday vetoed Senate Bill 50, legislation that sought to expand the hours during which 14- and 15-year-olds could work on school nights. The bill proposed changes to sections 3331.02 and 4109.07 of the Ohio Revised Code, specifically adjusting age and schooling certificate requirements and permitting younger teens to work later into the evening during the school week. Rep. James Hoops, R-Napoleon, and Sen. Rob McColley, R-Napoleon, both voted in favor of the bill.In his veto message, DeWine said the legislation would have made a significant and in his view, unnecessary, shift in long-standing child labor rules. Under current law, 14- and 15-year-olds may work after school until 7 p.m. during the academic year. Senate Bill 50 would have extended that cutoff to 9 p.m. on school nights, a change DeWine said he could not support.
