Puppy scams are on the rise in Ohio

It’s the old saying, “buyer…beware” as internet puppy scams are on the rise, with more than 40 incidents reported statewide since Jan. 1. Con artists post pictures online advertising desirable breeds. They then secure payment for the pet, but never provide it to the customer. Average loss per incident is about $600. The deceptive ads are often found on websites offering a specific type of dog, such as a teacup Maltese, shih tzu, or pocket beagle, and the site’s name may include words like “adorable pups,” “cutest puppies,” or the name of the supposed breeder. Phony ads also may be posted on Craigslist or social media sites.
