Robert A. Storrer, 95

Robert A. Storrer, 95, of Montpelier passed away Sunday evening at Hillside Country Living in rural Bryan. He was born on March 28, 1925 in Montpelier to Adolph Conrad and Mildred May (Weuger) Storrer. On June 23, 1946 he married Jane L. Grimes in Montpelier and she preceded him in death. They were married for 70 years.

Bob was a 1943 graduate of Montpelier High School. During high school Bob was involved in football, basketball and track. After high school he attended both Bowling Green State University and Defiance College where he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Bob was hired at Montpelier in 1948 as an elementary teacher where he taught for 14 years. During that time Bob coached football, basketball and track. In 1962 he became the elementary principal, a position he held for the next 24 years. Bob retired from education in 1986 after 38 years. Montpelier Schools has twice recognized him for his years of service to the school district; once in 1993 when the Elementary School was renamed Robert A. Storrer Elementary School and again in 2010 where the elementary wing was named Robert A. Storrer Elementary Wing. Bob was not only respected by his students and staff, he was well respected within the community of Montpelier. He was the Bean Days Parade Grand Marshall in 1993, Montpelier Area Foundation’s most outstanding citizen in 1997, and in 2011 the village named the grounds of the old elementary school the Robert A. Storrer Municipal Park. Other distinguished honors for Mr. Storrer were an appreciation award for 30 years as a statistician for high school football and basketball teams, and he was the official scorer of the Boys Basketball State Tournament in 1976. He was inducted into the Williams County Hall of Recognition in 2011, the Montpelier Academic Hall of Fame in 2017 and the Montpelier Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019. Bob served on many committees during his tenure. He was an original member of the Montpelier Area Foundation, a member of the United Way Board of Trustees, a member of the Park Board for 30 years where he started Little League in Montpelier with two other enthusiasts and was very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Montpelier. During his free time Bob enjoyed playing tennis, golf, gardening, playing cards, cooking and spending time with family.

Bob is survived by his children John (Cindy) Storrer of New Bremen, Ohio, Julie (John) Trautman of Bryan, Ohio and Dave (Julie) Storrer of Wauseon, Ohio; six grandchildren, Michael Storrer, Joshua Storrer, Bart Storrer, Sarah Tangeman, Kyle Storrer and Hannah Weideman; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jane and his brother Lyle Storrer.

A time to receive friends will be on Saturday, August 22nd from 10am-2pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Montpelier. Bob will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier. Memorial contributions may be given to the Montpelier First Presbyterian Church or the Montpelier Elementary Principal’s Fund. The family has asked that if attending visitation please adhere to recommended social distancing guidelines and bring a mask as wearing one will be required.
