Shirley A. Crampton, 87

Shirley A. Crampton, 87, of Bryan passed away Friday afternoon. She was born on February 21, 1928 at home on the family farm in Stryker, Ohio, to Cletus I. and Elizabeth A. (Wyse) Aschliman. Shirley graduated from Stryker High School in 1946. On November 22, 1950 she married Richard L. Crampton and he preceded her in death on October 16, 1992.

Upon graduation from high school, Shirley began work as a legal assistant for Judge Chauncey Newcomer in Bryan. She continued with him until his death in 1954, and subsequently worked for his son and grandson and the Newcomer law firm for 61 years, specializing in real estate and probate. She also worked for the law firm of Topper & Alloway in Columbus, Ohio for approximately 12 years while her daughters were receiving special education for the deaf. Upon her return from Columbus, she continued with the Newcomer firm, working in the Montpelier office with Bob Geesey. Shirley truly enjoyed her work and being of service. She retired in 2007. For many years, she made her home at Clear Lake, Indiana where she enjoyed hosting her children and grandchildren. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, reading and playing the piano.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bryan. She was also a member of the Bryan Lionness Club and for 25 years she served on the Town Board of Clear Lake, Indiana.

Shirley is survived by three daughters, Debra (J.C. Figueroa) Crampton of New York, New York, Carolyn B. Dann of Bryan, and Barbara (Gary) Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Maya (Taka) Osuga, Katarina Dann, Tim Johnson and Kristina Dann; and three great grandchildren, Cora Allen, Aiden Osuga, and Vivian Lassiter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, one granddaughter Jennifer Johnson, two brothers, Stanley and Verdene Aschliman, and one sister Phyllis Roth.

Visitation for Shirley will be on Thursday, February 18th from 2-7pm at the Thompson-Geesey Funeral Home on Empire Street in Montpelier. Services will be on Friday at 11am at the Lockport Mennonite Church in Stryker with Pastor Steve Heatwole to officiate. Interment will follow at Lockport Cemetery in Stryker. Memorial contributions may be given to City of Bryan Parks and Recreation.
