Thomas McDiarmid, 87

Thomas McDiarmid, 87, of Defiance, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on October 27, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Peter E. and Jane M. (Sweeney) McDiarmid. Tom attended school in the Detroit area. In February of 1956 he married Margie I. Cox and she preceded him in death on August 3, 1983.

Tom honorably served his country at the age of 17 in the Merchant Marines before being drafted into the United States Marines during the Korean War. After his discharge he began working for Norfolk Western Railroad in the Detroit area and did so up until 1968 when he and his family moved to Pioneer. Tom retired from Chase Brass as a machinist in 1983. He had many hobbies which included bowling, golfing, scuba diving, riding dirt bikes, and reading. Tom loved watching sports and cheering on his favorite teams, the Detroit Tigers and the Ohio State Buckeyes in football. He also held his small aircraft pilot license and enjoyed flying his airplane.

Tom is survived by his five children, Jane M. Harrington of Pioneer, Thomas J. McDiarmid of Cement City, MI, Jim M. McDiarmid of Pioneer, Robert E. McDiarmid of Lake Seneca, and Daniel S. McDiarmid of South Bend, IN; significant other, Martha “Marty” Wolfrum of Defiance; eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; five siblings, Edward McDiarmid of Southgate, MI, Peter (Carol) McDiarmid of Trenton, MI, Margaret Konopka and Mary Yurko both of Southgate MI and Catherine (Charles) Stallman of Groose Ile, MI; Marty’s family members; nieces, nephews other family members and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Margie I. McDiarmid and sister, Nancy King.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. Funeral services will take place immediately following visitation at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Jeremy Harrington to officiate. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier with military honors being presented by the Montpelier V.F.W. Donations may be made to Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
