April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month and the Ohio State Highway Patrol is focused on reducing that dangerous behavior. There are three forms of distraction, according to Lt. Robert Ashenfelter, commander of the OSHP’s Defiance Post. Visual distraction involves drivers taking their eyes off the road; manual distraction involves taking one’s hands off the steering wheel and cognitive distraction involves taking one’s mind off driving. Sending or receiving a text message behind the wheel combines all three. The patrol has its own emergency phone number, #677. Every calls goes to the nearest patrol post so troopers can respond faster.
