Edgerton public school treasurer William Blakely presented his five-year financial forecast for the school district during this week’s school board meeting. An issue that arose for Blakely when attempting to predict the financial state of the school district five years down the road was also having to predict the outcome of how state funding will be divided up. Blakely described how the state determines this and why the exact amount of money for the future is not certain yet. Currently, funding is based on fiscal year 2018 numbers, but a new bill that has passed in the Ohio House of Representatives uses fiscal year 2022 numbers. In the forecast, Blakely used 2018 numbers because he is skeptical the bill will pass the Senate as it is written. Although he expressed again he is comfortable with where the district’s future is financially, he did mention some concern for currently having a projection for more expenditures than revenue in 2025, 2026 and 2027.
