Albert H. “Al” Horn, Jr., 98

Albert H. “Al” Horn, Jr., age 98, of Bryan, Ohio passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family and friends on Thursday, August 5, 2021. Born Tuesday, October 3, 1922, to Albert H. and Ruth (Limbird) Horn, Sr., Al graduated in 1942 from Tiffin University with a degree in accounting. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge, Al worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Toledo and Lima, Ohio before settling in the neighboring city of Kenton. While there, Al became involved with the Masonic Lodge #154, Order of the Eastern Star Latham Chapter #364, Elks #157, President of Jaycees, and St. John’s United Church of Christ Council.

On May 26, 1957, Al married June A. (Castor) Horn, and together they are the parents of a daughter, Jennifer R. Horn, and her dog Matteo, of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1967, Al’s job transferred him to Bryan, Ohio. Driven to serve his community, Al was integral in helping to establish the Bryan Area Foundation, which to date has gifted more than $13.4 million in grants and scholarships to Williams County residents. He also served on the Community Hospitals and Wellness Center Board of Directors for more than forty years. His proudest moment was helping to launch the SHARE Foundation, which enables those with health care needs who are financially disadvantaged, to seek hospital treatment.

Al was also actively involved and held various positions with the following organizations: Wesley United Methodist Church, Zenobia Temple of Toledo and Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Toledo, Hardin County Community Foundation, Bryan Area YWCA Search Committee, Bowling Green State University Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity President’s Club, Treasurer of Bryan City Schools and City of Bryan operating levies, and Co-Treasurer of the Bryan Athletic Boosters Track and Field project. He was also a lifelong member of Rotary, serving as President from 1983-1984, and for his dedication received three Paul Harris Awards.

Filling an unexpired term, Al was appointed to the Bryan Public Affairs Board in 2004 and elected again in 2006 and 2012, retiring in 2015. During his tenure as a Board Member, Al served on the finance, water, electric, communications and human resources committees. He was elected Board Chairman in 2014 at the age of ninety-two.

In recognition of Al’s many community accomplishments, he received the 2004 Bryan Area Foundation Good Citizen Award. In 2015, he was inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame and Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. His military service was also acknowledged when he participated in an Honor Flight out of Toledo.

In 1983, he and his wife established their own private tax consulting business, where he worked for over 38 years, closing it this past spring.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, wife, June A. Horn, and brother, Wilbert E. Horn, and his beloved horse Bonnie, cat Princess and dogs Snips and Witney.

Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Schindewolf-Stout-Crates Funeral Home, 200 East Columbus St., Kenton, OH 43326. Grave side funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at Grove Cemetery, Kenton, Ohio, with Pastors Peter Paige and Scott Johnson officiating.

A memorial service commemorating Al’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 903 Center Street, Bryan, Ohio, with Pastor Peter Paige officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Arrangements by Krill Funeral Service, Bryan, Ohio.
