Deadly Crash Near Defiance

A 54-year-old man is dead after he loses control of his vehicle on Highway 24. Officials say the wet roadway is a factor in the accident, half a mile east of Jewel Road, near Defiance. They say Lyle Smith, of Ney, was driving an SUV westbound…when he went into the right shoulder…hitting a parked semi. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. State and local officials are investigating.
