Defiance County commissioners focused on beekeeping and apiary activities during their Thursday session. A meeting with Jamie Walters of the Black Swamp Beekeepers Association…soon to be the president of the Ohio Beekeepers Association…was the only agenda item handled by commissioners. Their main discussion point with Walters was how to maintain certain parts of the county-owned apiary area on Schick Road, along the Tiffin River. The area was established in recent years as a place for beekeeping and related educational activities, complete with a pollinator station to benefit bees. Commissioners plan to replace a circle drive there and relocate a parking area so it is away from erosion along the River. Officials suggest…the area where the drive will be replaced may be planted with pollinator mix in lieu of grass. The discussions continue.
