A local man was sentenced to prison Monday in Defiance County Common Pleas Court on a charge that he attempted to set fire to a vehicle near a Defiance residence. Phillip Powell of Kammeyer Road, was given an 18-month prison term by Judge Joseph Schmenk on a charge of attempted felonious assault, and placed on community control on a charge of attempted aggravated arson. He will be eligible for judicial release after serving six months in prison, with his entry into a mental health treatment facility thereafter. Powell also was given credit for time served in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio since his arrest in August.
