HazMat Crash In Williams Co.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a property damage crash and hazardous materials leak that happened in the westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike, near milepost 11. Officials confirm…about 300 gallons of Chromic Acid, along with various vehicle fluids, such as diesel fuel, motor oil and antifreeze were on the ground. Some of the mixture ended up in a nearby ditch…but it’s believed that very little to none of the Chromic Acid leaked into the nearby St. Joseph’s River. As a precaution, a boom, to trap the substance…was erected in the water. They say James Mayfield, of Columbus, was westbound on the Turnpike. Mayfield’s semi hit another big rig in the rear. Mayfield’s truck became fully engulfed in flames…then came the leak. Chromic Acid is most known for its use in the metal finishing industry. Other common uses are as a wood preservative, production of plastic products, ceramic glazes and to clean laboratory glassware.
