Area law enforcement have received calls about an ongoing IRS scam that authorities say is common this time of year, coming just after tax season.
Defiance County Sheriff’s Department is getting calls about an IRS scam that they say is common after tax season. Chief Deputy Doug Engel said the fraudulent IRS caller claims that there was a mistake on the recipient’s tax return and indicated that he or she owed money to the federal government, according to Engel. To correct the supposed mistake and avoid penalties, he explained, the recipient was asked to send in a certain amount of money to a phony IRS post office box number.
The IRS, he said, never calls when there is a problem, but sends a letter to taxpayers.
