Larry R. Martin, 79, of Montpelier, passed away Sunday night at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on January 6, 1936 in Montpelier to Carl and Margaret (Herb) Martin. Larry graduated from Montpelier High School in 1954. On August 19, 1956 he married Marcia J. Zulch in Montpelier and she survives.
Larry retired on March 31, 1996 from Norfolk Southern Railroad as a conductor. His 41 year career with the railroad began in 1955 with the Wabash Railroad. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Montpelier and served on Session as an Elder for many years. Larry served on the Montpelier school board from 1972-1983; and again from 2008-present, serving as the president for several years. He also served on the Four County Career Center School Board from 2008-present, where he was the 2015 president. Larry served on the Holiday City Tourism Board and was a former Jefferson Township Trustee.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marcia; one son, Scott (Lori) Martin of Montpelier; one daughter, Susan (Robert) Savage of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Andrew (Cambria) Savage of Bend, Oregon, Elizabeth Savage of Frisco, Colorado, Tyler Martin of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Kelsi Martin of Columbus, Ohio; and one sister Patricia (Kenneth) Wilcox of Montpelier.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Carl Martin and Margaret Calvin.
A time to receive friends will be on Wednesday, November 18th from 3-8pm at the Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church in Montpelier with Reverend David Tilly to officiate. A private interment will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
