Many farmers in the region are worrying about this year’s crops. The National Weather Service has reported in May, there were only five days without precipitation in Defiance. Rainfall totals were approximately an inch above normal. Further south, near Lima there were six days without precipitation in the same time frame, but with more rain. The Lima area got almost seven inches…also above normal. Because of all that, officials say only 22% of the corn crop has been planted…only 11% of soybeans are now in the ground. That compares to 80% and 65%, respectively, for the same time last year. Wheat farmers are expressing similar concerns.
