We have new information about a utility scam in Montpelier. A resident called police to say someone had called from the “electric department” and told the homeowner they were late on their payment. The homeowner began to ask questions, and the caller hung up.
Police Chief Dan McGee warns residents that the village ties utilities together, and no one would call you about a singular utility service. He also said any time anyone calls you and forcefully urges you to make a payment immediately on the phone, it’s a scam. They typically demand money orders, wire transfers, or pre-paid debit card be sent to square the bill. If you get a call like this, hang up.
