A smoke alarm that went off Sunday night is being credited with quite possibly saving the lives of Sandy and Jim Holley of Defiance. The Holley’s say neighbors were pounding on their front door to let them know that the house was on fire just after 11 Sunday night. The couple grabbed their pets and safely got out of the house, where they said that even as they ran, there was still no visible smoke inside. They also say that they were lucky to escape with only the clothes on their backs, as the flames spread quickly. The fire took hours to extinguish, and now the couple is staying at a motel as they search for another place to live. They were unable to save anything, so they need everything, including clothing. If you can help out, contact the Red Cross at 419–329-2900. To make a monetary donation on their behalf, contact the Red Cross or Huntington Bank. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
