Sprague In Bryan

Ohio Treasurer, Robert Sprague stopped in Bryan…discussing his support of a proposed change to the state constitution. Sprague, a Republican, is supporting the proposed change in the constitution that would require at least 60% approval of voters for any future change to the state document. Voters will decide on the issue during a special election in August. Sprague was in Bryan to discuss the issue with the Williams County Republican Party. The treasurer says the special election ballot issue is an attempt to protect the state’s founding document and to make sure the state remains stable. Sprague pointed out the U.S. Constitution has a high threshold, a two-thirds vote in Congress, in order to be amended. He added since the threshold in Ohio has been set at 50% in 1912, there have been 172 changes to the state’s constitution. He compared that to 27 in the U.S. Constitution. Sprague said the 60% threshold is getting support from a broad coalition, including the business community.
