Defiance Mayor Mike McCann’s plan to study the possibility of having the county sheriff’s office assume police duties in Defiance set off much discussion. At the City Council meeting Tuesday night, many who packed the council chambers spoke up with a variety of responses including concern and skepticism. One retired officer noted the same was done in Indianapolis and “it’s been a disaster.” A Retired city police chief suggested a professional study of the police department, rather than undertaking one internally. The contentious issue prompted Council President Mike Ketcham to respond. He told the crowd that Defiance is looking at the “financial situation of the organization” to “see if there is a better way to do it.” However, he said “threats” — an apparent reference to phone calls on the issue — have to stop.
