Local pediatricians say they are currently seeing an increase in hand, foot and mouth disease cases, which is more common in the warmer months, from late spring to early fall. And yes, it’s contagious. The common symptoms are the classic rash, which can be around the hands, the feet, the mouth. But also in infants and young children, it can be on the trunk, the limbs and the diaper area. Typically, hand, foot and mouth can be treated at home without needing a doctor to prescribe medications. A doctor may need to be involved, however, if other complications arise. Cleanliness is key to beating the bug.
