Motorcycle Crash Takes The Life Of Canadian Man

A motorcyclist from Canada died early Sunday morning when his bike was rear ended on I-69 north of Ashley. The crash happened at 2:25am at the 343.5 mile marker on the southbound side of I-69, when a vehicle driven by 36 year old Chet Gilbert of Ashley, and a Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by 52 year old Brian Platten of Ontario were both southbound, and Gilbert’s vehicle slammed into the motorcycle from behind. Platten, who was thrown from the bike, was found lying along the shoulder of the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner. According to police, he was wearing a helmet. Gilbert was taken to an area hospital. The investigation is ongoing, but initial results indicate that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
